fastest in the most competitive field of Late Model Stock Cars anywhere.
Monteith picked up a top ten in his first start and then on his next trip to Motor Mile, he left with a top five as his team continues to get his car dialed in for the 4/10 mile speedplant. Through running at Lonesome Pine earlier this season, he had became friends with Blake Jones, who is a 13-year old up and coming driver racing Late Model Stock Cars this season. Blake's crew chief, Wade Day has been a long time friend of Monteith's and when Blake's father, Teddy purchased a new Super Late Model, he decided to give Nate the chance to drive it while Blake was still learning the ropes in his Late Model Stock Cars.
This past weekend was Monteith's first opportunity to race the Super Late Model car after successfully testing it several times. Monteith took the new car, that was built a few years ago for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver, Mark Martin to drive in the Snowball Derby, the largest Super Late Model race in the world, but Martin never raced it. Monteith was the first to race the car as he hauled it to Newport Speedway in Newport, TN this past weekend not knowing for sure what to expect as he'd never competed in a Super Late Model himself.
Monteith was fast right off the truck and knew that he had a car that could easily compete for a win, but never expected in qualifying to go out and break the track record with a lap of 12.53 seconds. Monteith then went on to dominate the race despite having to start third after a track mandated invert. Monteith took the lead on lap nine and never relinquished it for his first career Super Late Model victory in his first career Super Late Model start. It was also the first victory for Teddy Jones Racing in the Super Late Model division and came one week after, Blake Jones won his first career Late Model Stock Car race at Lonesome Pine Raceway.
"Oh man, this is just an awesome deal to have the kind of night we did, winning the race and also setting a new track record, while making our Super Late Model debut," said Monteith after celebrating with crew, family and friends in victory lane. "This type car is so much different to drive from the Late Model Stocks I've driven throughout my career, but I really do like how these cars drive and race.
"We practiced the car here at Newport yesterday(Friday), basically just shaking it down and getting a feel for driving it. Then back at the shop we changed the shocks and springs and put a set-up under the car to what we hoped would be a good package when we came back on race day. When we unloaded Saturday afternoon for practice, right off in the hot heat of the sun and with worn tires with several laps on them, we were pretty quick, running a 12.75. Back in the pits my crew and I talked and we knew we would be better once we bolted new tires on the car to qualify on, and sure enough we picked up considerably. Ran a 12.61 our first lap of qualifying and then ran the 12.53 on our second lap."
Monteith was excited about the way the car drove as well as some of the names he was able to beat in the race including Mart Nesbitt, David Flynn, Jeff Myers and part-time NASCAR Nationwide Series driver, Stephen Leicht.
"Our car drove really well in the race," Monteith said. "We quickly got around (Keith)Rankin for second and then I rode behind Mart(Nesbitt) there for a few laps, seeing where he was good at and where I was good at. We were all over his rear bumper and I got a good run going into the first turn to get to inside of him and then we just powered our way past him racing off the corner to get the lead. We had a fast car, that's for sure. Even though this was my first-ever start in a Super Late Model, I really felt comfortable driving the car."
Monteith will be back behind the wheel of his family owned Late Model Stock Car in two weeks after taking a weekend off this weekend to heal up from second degree burns he received while racing the Super Late Model in the 100-lap race this past weekend. Monteith will be at Motor Mile Speedway on July 31st with the Late Model Stock Car and then will return to Newport Speedway for his second Super Late Model start in the PASS South Series race on August 7th.
"Yeah, we're really looking forward to running the PASS South race at Newport next month, because we know we've got a really good car and feel our chance of having a strong run is very good," stated Monteith. "There's no question we've got a fast car, and it's also a very good handling car too. Those PASS South races are more laps than what we ran tonight, but we learned some things racing tonight that we'll file away in our notes and use when we next run the car. You've got some really good competitors with the PASS guys, and we know there will probably be at least 25-30 cars present. You'll have to bring your 'A-game' for that show, or you'll be left behind."
