Bristol, TN(August 24, 2009) -- Nate Monteith got the chance of a lifetime in the O'Reilly 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on Wednesday, August 19th and made the most of it despite some tough circumstances.
Monteith, the 2008 Late Model Stock Car track champion at Lonesome Pine Raceway and the current points leader in the same division at the Coeburn, VA track found himself in a position to drive a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race for one of the series' most sucessful teams, Billy Ballew Motorsports. Ballew fields two full time truck teams including the one that NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver, Kyle Busch races for on a part-time basis.
Monteith Qualifies 20th, Gets Spun Early, Rallies to 26th
Monteith, who is now 27-years old has raced in many different touring series through the years as he's tried to make it in the world of NASCAR stock car racing including starts in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and ARCA Series, but many times in underfunded rides. This time with the help of Monteith's Late Model sponsor, Bristol based Graceway Pharmaceuticals, the opportunity would be there drive in great equipment with a top name crew chief atop the pit box and every piece of the puzzle in place.
Once the day came for the race Monteith began to get to know his crew chief, Brad Parrott and his crew as they worked on the car to get it ready to hit the track. Once on the track, Monteith struggled a little in the first practice and didn't get to make a complete lap up to speed as the truck kept bottoming out. Monteith finally got to make some laps in the final practice session and turned some solid laps that would put him 23rd on the charts despite never being able to mock-up for a qualifying run.
Monteith was tense all day as the truck he was running was a third truck out of the Billy Ballew Motorsports stables and not having any points provisionals to fall back on, but when it came time to qualify the Bristol, Tennessee native laid it all on the line and turned in a great lap. Monteith, in fact was good enough on lap one that he cut the truck off and held on to his 20th place qualifying effort as the last car to take to the track for qualifying.
"The lap felt great, I knew we would be fast enough to make the field, but you never know what can happen," said Monteith after his qualifying lap. "It's always tough when you're a go or go-homer; We knew we were fast in practice even without making a mock-qualifying run."
Monteith's great qualifying run would be the highlight of the race as early on in the 200-lap race, he would be hit from behind and turned around in front of the field. Monteith was then clipped by another truck which caused his radiator's duct work to be crushed and dragging and the NASCAR officials would force Monteith's team to pit to fix the damage. Monteith's green flag pit stop would cause him to go down many laps before the team was able to fix the truck and resume racing.
Monteith did however manage to complete the race despite the early damage and rallied late in the race with other trucks falling out of the race and finished in the 26th position. Monteith was happy with the results despite a long race.
"I had a lot of fun," said Montieth. "We had a rough go of it after the early contact, but it was a good experience. I just want to thank Graceway Pharmaceuticals, Billy Ballew Motorsports, Brad Parrott and the entire team. Tonight was a great opportunity and it was good to see Kyle(Busch) win for Graceway tonight too."
Monteith's teammates, who both featured Graceway Pharmaceuticals signage on them, both had great runs as Kyle Busch won the race, Aric Almirola finished sixth and Monteith felt as if he had a truck good enough to contend as well.
"All the Graceway(Pharmaceuticals) trucks were good, Billy Ballew's equipment is certainly second to none; I just wish we hadn't have been involved in that wreck early in the race," explained Monteith. "We had a great truck and I'm certain we could have finished in the top ten if that hadn't have happened."
Montieth hopes this won't be the last time he gets to race in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and maybe again soon with Billy Ballew Motorsports team. For now Monteith will go back to focusing on his Late Model Stock Car and the championship at Lonesome Pine Raceway when the track resumes racing on Saturday, September 5th.
Monteith is supported by Graceway Pharmaceuticals, Amsoil, SPEK Gauges, Clark's Automotive Race Engines, Griffin Radiators, Five Star Stock Car Bodies, TAB Performance, WD Performance Technology, Sherwin Williams Auto Finishes and Pistone LTO Chassis.
